The Department of Russian Studies was established in 1997 as a section of Slavic languages within the Department of Slovak Language and Literature. In 2003, it became an independent department under the name of the Department of Slavic Philology. Since 2013, it has been known as the Department of Russian Studies.
The department is staffed by seven members and is led by doc. PhDr. Andrea Grominová, PhD.
